Be marketing savvy to save

Gail Quigley |Couponista

Companies are trying a lot of different strategies and marketing techniques to get us in the store or to purchase their products. From loss leader sales, price matching, joint promotions (like Kellogg’s and Hasbro), mail out coupons, coupons on tear pads, coupons called “peelies” (coupons attached physically to the product in the store), hang tags (coupons hanging off the product or put on our door knob at home) and even small samples of one of the company’s other products attached to products to allow us to try another one of their products free or just a miniature of the same product.

People wonder if they can simply take the ‘hang tag,’ peelie coupon or the small samples off the products in the store without purchasing the product. The short answer is no, absolutely not. The sample is attached usually by tape and is meant to be an extra or bonus for purchasing the product that it is attached to. The peelies are very much the same, they are a coupon, yes, but attached to the product by sticky material, meant to be used when you purchase the product in the store or at a later time if you prefer. The hang tags are the same, if they are attached to the product you get it when you purchase that product. If the hang tag is on your front door you can of course use it as you wish.

 Tips

A) P & G Brandsaver Insert is out this week in the flyer packages as well as in most Chronicle Herald newspapers. This is a great insert with coupons that week that you can use and get a few good deals.

B) Watch for the Kellogg’s Cereal with the Hasbro Free Toy coupon as they have been spotted in Nova Scotia and there are a limited amount of those coupons available.
