When it comes to hockey events, Halifax has a pretty impressive resume. The World Juniors were here in 2003, 2004 the IIHF World Women’s Championships, 2008 the men’s IIHF World Championship was here as well as several NHL exhibition games. This weekend won’t be any different. (Contributed)

The CIS University Cup is the Men’s National Hockey Championship in Canadian Interuniversity Sport and the best hockey this side of pro. For the first time in CIS University Cup History, the 2015 Championship will include an eight-team field, comprised of three teams from the AUS, three teams from the OUA and two teams from Canada West. The new format will be single elimination, ensuring intense heart pumping action at every game, as it is live or die for these players every game. The gold medal game set for 6:30 p.m. Sunday, March 15.

The 2015 and 2016 CIS University Cup Men’s Hockey Championship will both be hosted at the Scotiabank Centre in downtown Halifax for the first time. Sports & Entertainment Atlantic, in partnership with St. FX University and Saint Mary’s University will produce both events.

This weekend won’t be any different. With two hockey games daily starting Thursday afternoon running right through to Sunday night, it’s expected to be a fun filled hockey weekend that fans of all ages can enjoy.

Friday we will be hosting a Hockey Health Symposium at the World Trade and Convention Centre. Featuring a full day of discussion around a healthy approach to youth sport with a focus on the sport our Nation loves – hockey.

A host of medical experts will cover topics such as:

• Injury prevention in youth hockey

• Fueling performance through proper nutrition

• Psychological benefits of sport

• Recent advances in hockey equipment

• And a panel discussion on the prevention and treatment of concussions

The Hockey Health Symposium is designed for medical professionals, coaches and parents. Conveniently located adjacent to the Scotiabank Centre inside the World Trade and Convention Centre, your registration will include tickets to the two University Cup games on Friday, March 13, along with lunch and access to all symposium sessions. That’s not all. Hockey Canada will also be set up at Parade Square for the week hosting the Hockey Canada Century Tour creating a free, family friendly Fan Festival throughout the CIS University Cup. Fan Fest will be open daily from noon to 7 p.m. and will include an exhibit of hockey Canada memorabilia from the past century and also include an interactive video wall. Fans can also visit one of four “Hockey Houses” in downtown Halifax as we take-over Cheers, The Auction House, Durty Nelly’s and the Stubborn Goat and turn them into alumni gathering places for pre and post game festivities.
