Making March Break fun is one of Halifax Public Libraries’ specialities. Each year, I enjoy pouring over what goodies the children services library staff plan for the kids. Here are some highlights for March Break 2015.
Frozen Sing-alongs
Little people (and their parents, I have noticed) have gone wild over the movie Frozen. They are bound to thrill over all four of the Library’s film and song events for March Break. Imagine a room full of kids watching Frozen and singing with all of their hearts, especially to “Let it Go.” You have probably seen your child do it, but have you experienced a crowd of munchkins doing it, too? Prepare yourselves for some electric, hilarious, and heartwarming moments.
Big events
Often, there is a least one March Break program that tips the scales. This year we have two: Kids’ CBC and the Artist Boot Camp Workshops & Art Show. I hope you did not miss the first one, which was a morning of crafts and stories with one of Canada’s most cherished TV personalities, and I hope your gifted young one is able to attend the second one, which is a series of three art programs designed to awaken hidden talents.
Cool tech
I must confess to some jealous feelings toward the target age of this highlight. Youth are able to learn about stop-motion animation, have already experimented with squishy circuits (components that use playdough to form electric circuits), and can participate in a two-part program coding introduction. These are mind-expanding days for children and the Library is here to provide access and guidance.
Plain old silly fun
Many of the Library’s youth programs are wrapped up in fun while maintaining a core of early literacy or some other developmental purpose. Sometimes, though, our goal is simpler: to create a fantastic time for the young people of our communities. A pizza taste off, science experiments, and musical events are just three examples. There are dozens more.
Stop by any of our 14 branches and let us help you make your children’s March Break the best one yet!
