1,000-ft. waterslide coming to Halifax this summer

Katie Ingram

Those who ever wanted to take their Slip N’ Slide to the next level will get a chance when Slide the City brings their 1,000-ft. waterslide to Halifax.

A two-day event, Slide the City Halifax is part of a series of events being put on across the United States and Canada, including those in Fort McMurray, Kamloops and Winnipeg. According to Chanler Bledsoe, a customer service representative for Slide the City, the creators wanted to bring back a summer activity from their childhood, but in a bigger way.

“The idea of Slide the City came from those childhood memories of all those summer day adventures when your backyard became a water park with just a tarp and some water,” says Bledsoe. “Everyone could use reminding of these playful times spent in the sun with friends and family.”

Even though the Halifax event was only announced in May, Haligonians are already looking forward it.

“It appears to be a lot of fun,” says Kayla Burgess who heard about the event online. “Kids would certainly enjoy it and if it’s a hot summer’s day it would surely cool you off.”

Burgess also finds that having an event of this calibre should bring people together, as she sees it as something almost everyone can take part in.

“It would be a great summer event for the city to possibly bring in people from other communities [and] it will bring together people of all ages for a little summer fun,” she says.

Bex Saunders discovered Side the City when she came across a similar event in Quebec, but she didn’t think that Halifax would get the chance to become a host city.

“Sometimes you see these things in bigger cities and think it won’t come here because we’re small,” she says. “[Although] I thought they should really bring this to Halifax; it would be absolutely amazing.”

However, when hearing a Slide the City Halifax had been scheduled, Saunders starting looking into the event so she could sign up when registration began.

“I’m really excited,” she says. “Anything that’s a thrill seeking event like that is my cup of tea, so as soon as I saw it [I said] I am defiantly doing this.”

Saunders adds that if the event is a success, she hopes other unique events will be brought or will think of coming to the Halifax or Nova Scotia areas.

“We often have to travel for stuff like this, so it’s something we should get on board with,” she says. “Hopefully it will bring more activities to us.”

Bledsoe noted that date details and the event’s location haven’t yet been finalized.

The website also states that Slide the City Halifax will be a ‘Triple Slider’ event where participants will be able to slide three times during the day they for which they are registered.
